Bargello Needlebook Cover

Instructor: Gwen Loiselle

Skill Level: Some experience with counted work

Class information:

This fun and easy workshop includes detailed instructions and pattern to make this cute project. Finished size is 4 ½ inches x 4 ½ inches.

Needlebook will be worked on 22 count congress cloth with DMC Pearl Cotton. There is no pre-class work required.

Time in class will be spent working on the bargello cover. Written instructions will be provided and reviewed during the class for the completion of the needlebook.

Instructor information:

Gwen Loiselle joined the Edmonton Needlecraft Guild in 2016. She has taught Bargello on Zoom for the Edmonton Needlecraft Guild during COVID. She enjoys many crafting techniques some of which include, quilting, embroidery, hardanger and goldwork. She is self taught on the Bargello technique and is now creating her own designs.


Beaded Needle Case

Class information:

In this workshop, you will make a beautiful, beaded needle case. You will learn how to bead around a wooden needle case with the peyote stitch, using Delica beads. Needle case size: 3 ½ inches by ½ inches.

All supplies are included in the kit. However, students are required to bring scissors, needle threader, a light and magnifier if needed.

Monarch Butterfly

Instructor: Wendy Innes

Class information:

The majestic Monarch butterfly with its wings outstretched in delicate detail, hovers above a vibrant thistle in full bloom. Worked in many fundamental stumpwork components for students to learn a new one or hone previous ones. turkey work, raised stem stitch, satin stitch, trellis stitch, felt padding, wired elements, to name a few, are used in this piece worked on a background of ivory silk in DMC threads. Design size is 4 inches in diameter.

Instructor information:

Wendy began her needlework journey at the age of 7 when her mother taught her basic embroidery stitches. She inherited her father’s artistic gene, which has contributed greatly to her love of design work. Her early passion has evolved over the past 40 years, and she has won several awards and accolades. Wendy also owned and operated a needlework store in Calgary for over 10 years, where she taught many classes in all forms of needlework, with a special passion for stumpwork.


Edge of the Field

Instructor: Linda McBain Cuyler

Class information:

Learn to paint a background and use your sewing machine to create a forest and field landscape. In this class, Linda will guide you to paint a summer or autumn landscape background with acrylic paint on canvas. No painting experience is necessary. When your background is completed, you will learn to set up your machine to embellish and create texture with machine embroidered trees and grasses, adding yarns for extra texture in the grasses. You will also add flowers using the machine. Your completed piece (approximately 7” x 9”) will make a beautiful, framed work of art. Bring your sewing machine out to play for a weekend.

Student Supply List -*darning or free-motion quilting foot* for your sewing machine-this is essential since you can’t do the class without one (a generic one that fits your machine is fine). It is a ring or u-shaped foot that bobs up and down as you sew so you can move your fabric. -sewing machine, that you know how to operate, in good working order (also sewing machine tools like a screwdriver, sewing machine manual if you need it) -size 16 (jeans weight) sewing machine needles -about 10 extra empty bobbins -extension cord/power bar if you have one -small, sharp, pointy thread scissors and larger scissors -paint shirt -travel coffee cup with a lid (for spillage safety if you like to work with your coffee at hand) Thread I will have lots of thread. But, if you want to, you can also bring your own thread. The thread can be any type of sewing thread (any weight or fibre content) or machine embroidery thread. If you do bring thread, you will mostly need greens/blues, gold/yellows, grey, flower colours -yarn and fabric bits if you have them.

Over 30 years ago, Linda was reckless and gave up the profession of interior design to become a full-time textile artist. Since then, she has created many colourful, highly textured artworks by combining paint, fabric, and heavy stitching. Her focus is on garden scenes, skies and landscapes that are filled with life and movement. Linda is a member of the Edmonton Needlecraft Guild and a professional member of the Alberta Craft Council. She has exhibited widely, including in South Korea, Italy and at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.


On The Way to Benito - cancelled

Instructor: Karen Osatchuk

Class information:

In this workshop, you will learn several stitching techniques like fabric piecing, surface embroidery, rug hooking, silk ribbon work, beading, and needle felting while making a one-of-a-kind landscape. Original design is 7 ½ inches square; however, students can make their piece a different size if preferred.

Students are required to bring the following supplies: scissors (paper and fabric), needles (tapestry, chenille and milliner), basting thread, paper (for note taking & sketching), pen, pencil, eraser, straight pins, glue stick, white chalk marker, stiletto and optional frame (Q Snap 11 x 11, small wooden quilt hoop – work can be done without a frame).

Instructor information:

Karen holds an Associate of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science in Clothing and Textiles degree. She worked and taught at Earthly Goods quilt store for 30 years. She taught many techniques such as silk ribbon embroidery, crazy quilting, rug hooking basics, soft sculpture (dolls & teddy bears), beading basics, Molas, needle punch embroidery, needle felting, embroidery, and quilting. Karen is a member of Edmonton Needlecraft Guild and several other guilds.
